Awareness of bodily sensations and the sensory eating experience for healthier food behaviour

Disturbances in the way segments of consumers perceive bodily sensations have been linked to unhealthy eating behavioural conditions. In this project, you will elucidate how populations differ in their capabilities to sense sensory stimuli and appetite sensations, clarify strategies to ease perception and support healthy eating behavior

Bodily sensations shape the way we perceive, interpret and react to the world. These sensations are triggered by the body’s internal state and the external environment and modulated by the individual’s ability to perceive bodily changes e.g. in appetite at the time they occur. Disturbances in the subjective sensitivity to these signals have been linked to unhealthy eating behaviours. For example, it is known that obese individuals tend to have lower sensitivity to sensing the internal state and more accentuated reactions to sensory stimuli, leading to exaggerated food consumption.

In this project you can work on tasks related to how populations differ in their capabilities to sense sensory stimuli and bodily appetite sensations, clarify strategies to be aware of these sensations, and use the strategies to support healthy eating behavior.
