Development of Serum-free media for cultivated meat

Work with a sustainable meat production of the future. Can you develop serum-free media for cultivated meat production?

Cultivated meat is a reasonably new technology for a sustainable production of meat in the future. However, there are some big challenges to overcome before cultivated meat can be introduced to the market, one of them being the development of methods to avoid the use of animal serum for cell cultivation.

We have recently formulated a serum-free cell culturing media for the proliferation of muscle cells in culture. Nevertheless, the ability of this media to sustain differentiation of the muscle cells into primitive muscle fibres are unknown. The project will investigate the performance of the muscle cells in culture during differentiation in this serum-free media, and if necessary optimise the composition to make the cell culture perform better.

During the project you can expect to get hands-on experience with cell culturing and analytical techniques like fusion-index, immunostaining. Real-time PCR, Western blotting.
