Enhancing legume production: Intercropping and varietal selection of pea and faba bean (ValPro)

How does cultivar selection and new intercropping systems improve protein production and quality of field pea and faba bean? Join our field and lab experiments with a European outlook!

Sustainable legume production is needed to feed the World. This calls for new innovative approaches. Two key topics are tested in field experiments at our research station AU-Auning:

  • Varietal selection based on regional suitability and nutritional characterization. Based on field testing of pea and faba bean varieties, the project will focus on understanding quality changes and climate resilience. Agronomic parameters and protein content will be evaluated to guide the selection of optimal cultivars in Denmark with perspectives to other European regions (Germany, Portugal, Italy, Ireland).
  • Potential of intercropping. Intercropping of field pea with faba bean will be evaluated based on field testing at AU-Auning as an innovative strategy to mitigate yield loss due to lodging. The harvest product is pea for protein extraction and flour milling and faba bean as a direct animal feed supplement.

The aim is to strengthen plant protein systems by improving production strategies, enhancing regional adaptation, and promoting sustainable agricultural practices.
