Nitrogen regulation of extracellular vesicle release and composition in wheat roots

How does nitrogen availability change the extracellular vesicles released by wheat roots? This thesis, linked to the EU EIC Pathfinder project EVOLVE, will investigate how nitrogen supply affects root EV release and composition in an international research environment

Nitrogen availability strongly influences plant growth and root signalling, but little is known about how it affects the release and composition of root-derived extracellular vesicles (EVs).

The student will investigate selected wheat genotypes under contrasting nitrogen supply, with a main focus on sufficient versus low N and, where relevant, different N forms. Root exudates will be collected and EV-enriched fractions analysed for particle abundance and selected molecular or chemical characteristics. Plant growth and physiological responses will be measured in parallel.

The exact treatments and analytical methods will be adapted to ongoing activities in the EU EIC Pathfinder project EVOLVE.

The project aims to identify reproducible links between nitrogen nutrition and root EV release and composition.
