Single cell protein from CO2-acetate – Proof-of-concept of downstream processing

Proteins from CO2 harvest for food – a sustainable protein production where mild downstream processing is needed

The idea of the project is to suggest proof-of-concept processing of single cell protein (SCP) for food. SCP will be provided by the pilot CORC facility at Campus Viborg.

Disruption of cells will be tested using different processing technologies including osmotic shock, pulse electric field (PEF), high pressure homogenization, or bed milling. Downstream processing will include a combination of filtration, heat and pH shift treatment, and enzymes will be tested to mitigate the nuclei acids and concentrate/purify the proteins from single cells. The obtained protein will be evaluated with respect to biochemical composition, focusing on protein content while the protein composition will be analyzed with SDS-page. Depending on time, more in-depth analysis can be performed as well.
